Test Pit 9: The Linear Feature (The Triangular Field)

Test Pit 9 was strategically sited in the triangular field to target an intriguing subsurface feature identified during our earlier geophysical investigations. The resistivity survey had revealed a distinct linear anomaly—a hard, high-resistance feature beneath the topsoil suggesting a potential stone wall foundation, trackway, or structural boundary.

This anomaly runs roughly parallel to the public footpath (believed to be the historic Barrow-to-Swarkestone road) and appears to align directly with the feature encountered in Test Pit 1. By placing Test Pit 9 along this projected line among the field’s earthworks, our goal was to physically intercept the feature, determine its composition, and confirm whether it indeed connects with Test Pit 1 to form a major continuous boundary or structure within the village landscape.
