Test Pit 2: Probing the Village Core

Although Test Pit 2 was located in the garden of a relatively modern house, its position within the village landscape made it a priority target. The property sits on land that formed part of the former grounds of Barrow Hall, which itself replaced an earlier hall on the same site.

Going further back in time, local history suggests this central, historic plot may well align with the location of the medieval Knights Hospitaller camera—their administrative centre within Barrow upon Trent. Despite the site’s modern surface appearance, its location in one of the oldest historic cores of the village made us eager to see what deeper, undisturbed contexts might reveal beneath the lawn.
