Heritage Weekend
Showcasing Our Discoveries: Heritage Open Weekend at St. Wilfrid’s
Fresh off the back of our main community dig, the Barrow Archaeology Group was invited to take part in the national Heritage Open Weekend at St. Wilfrid’s Church. It offered a fantastic opportunity to share our fresh discoveries directly with the village and wrap up a busy, successful season of fieldwork.
We set up a dedicated display stand inside the church featuring:
-
Freshly Processed Finds: A selection of cleaned and washed pottery, artifacts, and finds recovered from the test pits dug just the weekend before.
-
Village Test-Pit Map: A spatial map showing the exact locations of the test pits excavated across gardens and land throughout Barrow upon Trent.
-
Project Information: Background details on our ongoing research, methods, and plans to help build support and recruit volunteers for future events.
The weekend saw a wonderful turnout, with local residents, landowners who had hosted test pits, and dig volunteers coming along to inspect what had been brought to light from beneath their feet. It was a fitting celebration of our collective efforts and a brilliant chance to reflect on everything the community accomplished together.
